Britain's best and biggest agricultural and food show. 188,000 people can't be wrong! This 4 day event on the outskirts of Edinburgh has something for all the family. In addition to animals, machinery and handicrafts, there is a giant food hall for speciality produce with a 120 seater Cookery Theatre pus a Taste & Talk Theatre, both of which I run on behalf of the Royal Highland Society. In 2010 Wendy launched www.skanskfoodguide.com at top chef Andreas Lund’s Gastronomibutiken, Helsingborg with delicious treats washed down with local apple juice. (Photo Anna Nilsson) Since Wendy met environmentalist Bosse Dahlgren she has been getting to know Skåne’s food culture and has now published this unique non-profit making online guide to celebrate it. Wendy, a Scot, is a professional cook and educator, well known on Scotland’s food scene for her cookery shows and award-winning www.scottishfoodguide.com, launched in 2002. Frustrated by the ‘pay to get in’ nature of many guides, she created a website where consumers could trust her personal recommendations safe in the knowledge entry was on merit alone. As in Scotland Skånsk Food Guide costs are met from Wendy’s other food activities and optional marketing opportunities for listees. Husband Bosse Dahlgren is equally passionate about local produce, traditional farming and native breeds. The guide launched with approx 50 entries and will always be about quality not quantity: eligible businesses are added in due course but rest assured Wendy will be cherry picking the best with not a turbo pig or a chicken nugget in sight!

Gyllene Uttern (Golden Otter) is a simply beautiful place where you will receive a warm welcome and exceptional local cuisine. It was built in the 1930's and developed from a petrol stop and coffee shop into Sweden's first motor hotel. Overlooking Lake Vättern this region is steeped in history, the first kings ruled from Visingsö Island in the lake long before Stockholm held court. It is a series of intriguing buildings cleverly designed and very attractive. A great place to stop on the way north.

This is a mountain summer farm, a ”sheiling” in Scots. We were extremely lucky to find one that welcomes overnight visitors to experience this ancient tradition that used to be commonplace however sadly is diminishing. Margareta and her daughter Johanna produce unique butter, cheese and messmör from their cows who forage in the forest whilst Dad pops up from work in the village below. With no electricity at Torrlid, our candle lit log cabin was simple and spotless. We heard the cow bells as they grazed the tree strewn meadows, and ate “tunnbröds” a fine home made potato based crepe rolled with their own cheese along with lashings of excellent coffee and creamy milk straight from the cow. The cows returned for milking and stay in overnight, safe from predators (wise move as I’m not very brave with bears either) and in the early morning the cheesemaking begins. The messmör would not be ready until evening as this sweet whey butter takes 8 hours of stirring to reduce and caramelize. Most definitely Slow Food. We had an absolutely brilliant time and were made very very welcome. A wonderful place to stop…Ivarsbjörke near Sunne is in Värmland where Anna Hedstrand, artist and designer, holds her summer exhibitions and runs an absolutely beautiful B&B in her artistically restored original railway station building. Her home is very Arts and Crafts inspired and right beside the lake. Her artwork in tile, textile and collectables are throughout the house and displayed beautifully in her gallery. Her breakfasts are home made and delicious.
