This wonderful artisan bakery has a tasty range of rustic sourdough breads and a lovely cafe. They embrace Slow Food philosophy and use all natural ingredients. Here they are at Slow Food's Terra Madre in Torino, October 2014. Directions: go 100m to the right when you leave the railway station.

This imposing castle is almost surrounded by water (typical for this region) and has had an exciting past. Now largely restored and in more peaceful times it can be equally enjoyed for a romantic dinner for two or a larger celebration. The diningroom overlooks the stunning lake and woodland where wild geese roam. French doors open onto a large terrace, ideal for pre-dinner drinks and browsing the menu. The local seafood the day of our visit was cooked to pefection and the almond potatoes delicious.

Gorgeous bakery and café in the pretty hamlet of Vismarlövs. Quite the family business with Mum in law making all the breads and spettkakor whilst daughter in law bakes cakes for the café. The great range of breads are very fine and the shop very pretty with many old items of bakery equipment from bygone times on display. There are useful foodie items on sale too – local tomatoes, honey and jams on the day we went. The café is beautifully arranged with restored furniture and lovely fabrics all creatively set out with vintage china. A wonderful place to travel and tarry awhile. There is also a handicraft stuga adjacent, where home made weaving and tapestries are displayed alongside other local handicrafts including knitting and small gifts. No e mail address so telephone to check opening hours.

The name Årstiderna means the Seasons in Swedish so no surprise this restaurant takes seasonal cooking with local produce very seriously. The building has an interesting history and is a famous landmark in Malmo... these walls must have seen some amazing banquets over the centuries so where better to have a top class restaurant!

This eponymous restaurant was tricky to find at first but easy once you know it is in the old railway station building right on the tracks that run through the centre of Skurup. It is light bright and minimalist within – I particularly like their street sign with whisks and ladels! Skurup is a bustling small town and when we visited many locals were enjoying the ‘dagens’ or daily lunch where there is a small selection of main dishes, and your set price includes self-service salad, bread and butter, juice and coffee. Personally I think it a great system – simple, successful and quite quick as customers usually have limited time at lunch. Much of their food is organic and the lunch style is home cooking. The ingredients are carefully sourced - our pork was from Eslöv. Skurup Commun is famous for the home farm of Nils Holgersson, the boy who was flying over Sweden on the back of a goose in Selma Lagerlöf’s highly acclaimed and popular book. There is a statue of him on the hill nearby. No e mail address at present.

This lovely restored monastery makes the perfect setting for a farm shop. Very easy to reach and well signposted off the main road it is a spacious stable converted into a highly comprehensive farm shop and a very good café serving light meals, waffles and home baking. We had the waffles served with lashings of whipped cream and raspberry jam from Hallongården. You can sit within or out under the canopy of the chestnut trees as the garden is a little haven. The farm shop has local vegetables and ones from farther afield so you can do all your shopping here. They have breads and jams, berries and oils, herbs and much more including last but not least, their own estate lamb and organic meats.

Tunnbröd, for those who do not know, is very thin soft bread traditionally made in the north of Sweden. Fresh tunnbröd is best eaten rolled up but Maria also sells it dried and, as the name suggests, it is crispier and does not roll! It can be made from barley, wheatflour, rye or even with mashed potato added. Each home will have its own recipe. It is a real delicacy and very tasty, whether it be with home made jam, messmör, finely sliced cheese or just butter. Maria is from Norrland and brought her recipe with her. She also always stocks a modest range of Norrland goodies to tempt you with interesting new tastes. The shop and café stuga by the farm has sunny decking to sit outside. Open weekends and call to check other opening times.

'Raspberry Farm' is a very special place. Well signposted off the road to Trelleborg the farm buildings have been recently converted to accommodate a beautiful cafe, farm shop for berries, gift shop for all sorts of predominantly raspberry themed goodies along with other tasteful handicrafts, plus a deli zone selling their own raspberry jams, vinegars, liqueurs etc. The dishes in the cafe include raspberry mousse, cheesecake and cookies and the food is cleverly assembled in a basket for you. You then collect your raspberry coloured coffee flask and find your perfect place to sit. Great concept and a super family enterprise.

Ängavallen is quite unique and an asset to Skåne, in fact to Sweden. Rolf Axel Nordstöm has made this amazing place his life work and all the family are involved. He has two sons both working in the family business and I met his charming wife at the Gårdsbutik Café by the entrance gate to the Farm, Restaurant, Hotel and Conference Centre. They are justly proud of being totally organic and not only provide much employment in the area but invest time and energy in sharing best practice with others. High animal welfare standards, contented animals and natural homegrown produce and fodder are fundamental to their modus operandi. They have won many of the highest awards in all Sweden for their ground-breaking work and determination as it is not always simple to be a trailblazer. The bright and cheery CAFÉ is located at one end of the farm shop where they have a lovely selection of light dishes, juices and coffee, all organic of course. The RESTAURANT for fine dining is located in the main building, a beautiful manor style residence. The chef skills are superb – indeed the interconnecting kitchens are immaculate and smooth running hives of industry producing breads and pastries, pig trotters’ terrine and roasts – and that was just one snapshot! Check out dairy, meats, preserves, bakery and deli for more detailed information.
